Two years ago I moved into my new home and was most excited to get started furnishing and decorating. The number one item I was fixated on getting right was my couch. I wanted a large comfortable sectional couch with a chaise that would not only hold up against two small kids, but also maximize seating and foster a welcoming environment for gatherings with family and friends. So began the search. To make it even more challenging, my husband made me promise that this would be a worthwhile investment and truly last for years to come.
Throughout my search I prioritized the following five elements to help me find the perfect sectional for our family:
Size and Seating Capacity - Determine the size of the couch that will fit comfortably in your living space without overwhelming it. Consider the room's layout and the available space for the couch. Ensure that it can accommodate the number of guests you plan to entertain. A sectional or a large sofa with additional seating options like ottomans or accent chairs can be ideal for gatherings.
Comfort and Cushioning - Test the couch for comfort by sitting on it or if you are ordering online, trust the reviews. Look for cushions that are both supportive and plush - highly recommend detatched cushions over attached, as they are easier to clean and maintain their shape better. Foam cushions are generally more comfortable and durable than polyester or down-filled ones. Ensure that the depth and height of the seat are comfortable for a variety of body types. The backrest should provide good lumbar support.
Upholstery Material and Durability - Consider the upholstery material in terms of both aesthetics and practicality. Durable and stain-resistant fabrics, such as microfiber, leather, or synthetic blends, are great choices for entertaining as they are easier to clean and maintain. Keep in mind that light-colored fabrics might show stains more easily. Leather can be a luxurious option that's easy to wipe clean and pairs well with accent furniture.
Style and Design - Choose a couch that complements your decor and personal style. Consider the design, color, and overall aesthetics. Neutral colors like gray, beige, or navy are versatile and can match various design schemes. If you want a statement piece, opt for bold colors or patterns. The style of the couch, whether it's modern, traditional, or transitional, should align with your home's decor.
Functionality and Extras - Think about additional features that enhance entertainment. Some couches come with built-in cup holders, USB ports, or reclining options. Others may have hidden storage compartments. These features can make the couch more practical and comfortable for social gatherings, but keep in mind the managability to upkeep some of these features, especially if you have kids. Additionally, consider the ease of assembly and transportation if the couch needs to be moved frequently.
While these elements are essential, it's also important to consider your personal preferences and the needs of your household. Don't forget to factor in your budget, as comfortable and stylish couches come in a wide price range. Take your time to shop around and test different options to find the perfect couch for entertaining that fits your space and lifestyle.

After lots of searching online, sitting on friend's couches, and visiting stores, I chose the 5-seat Radley Chaise Sectional at Macy's. This sectional had all the elements that I was personally looking for - detachable cushions, easily cleaned fabric, a chaise, and a neutral color (heavenly mocha grey) that really worked in our living space. The review - I couldn't love it more!
After two years the sofa still looks like new and is extremely comfortable. I have spot cleaned spills from the kids and even removed the covers from the seat and back cusions to hand clean and dry - so so durable! I also love the dark wood feet that support the couch and make it look more luxurious. The best part is that the Radley comes in as a couch, perfect for smaller spaces, and the sectional can be order in 3, 4, 5, or even six pieces depending on the size that fits best in your living or family room. There is even a matching ottoman with a lift up top perfect storage (on my personal wish list).
